One of the fundamental needs on a wilderness trip is a solid night's sleep!
And for me a good pillow is necessary for a truly restful sleep. A good pillow has to balance two somewhat opposing characteristics:
Firm support and soft comfort. For backpacking and canoeing a good pillow also has to take up very little space.
Over the years I have tried all the tricks: cram a full-size pillow into my pack (and lose half of the pack's capacity!), roll up clothes inside a stuff sack, roll up clothes inside a
pillow case, and a couple of versions of the "scrunchable" camp pillow. None of these options met all three criteria: support, comfort, and low space requirements in the pack.
After a lot of experimentation I have arrived at an innovative solution that works great for me. It combines an inflatable pillow with a soft
"scrunchable" camp pillow. The inflatable pillow is approximately 12" by 12 ". It is a rubbery material like an air mattress.
When deflated it folds up to the size of a thin wallet. The soft camp pillow is from
Canadian Tire and is also approximately 12" by 12". It scrunches up and fits into a stuff sack that is about the size of two pairs of socks.
The inflatable pillow goes on the bottom and provides a firm base. The soft camp pillow sits on top of the inflatable pillow and provides the comfort as well as extra warmth.
The trick to making this work is velcro strips! I put adhesive velcro strips on the top of the inflatable pillow and on the bottom of the soft camp pillow.
The strips keep them tightly connected while sleeping. I also put them inside a pillow case then fold the pillow case under to add to the stability of the "system".
Some caution is needed when packing the components to prevent the velcro from falling off, but I've had it working for three seasons now with no problems.
There you have it! The Braz King Pillow System. Firm head and neck support without sacrificing comfort. And it packs away small and
lightweight.
